Background

Formal Academic Studies:
BA and MA in English Literature, University of BC;  Independent Studies in Children’s Literature, Simon Fraser University

Art Education:
When Carol was in her early 30’s, Master Painter and Calligrapher Lam Chin Shek selected her as a pupil.  He was her teacher for the next six years.  Under his guidance she learned traditions and skills in managing brush, ink, paper and---perhaps most importantly, her own ability to be attentive to the process without forcing intentions on the work!

During that period, Canadian artist Jack Wise was a mentor, teaching her about colour and the management of the brush stroke.  She thrived under the guidance of these two fine artists.

First-Person Arts Studies:
1974-1980 Lam Chin Shek: master calligrapher and painter - private instruction
1974-1981 Jack Wise: mentor and teacher, Chinese brush technique
